"It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of education have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wrack and ruin without fail. It is a very grave mistake to think that the enjoyment of seeing and searching can be promoted by means of coercion and a sense of duty."

-Albert Einstein on traditional education.

Alt. Ed.

People who value liberty and free thinking and acting need to take a second look at what schools they put their kids in. Our generations learn a lot more than facts from our education. We spend 10 -20 years of our formative years in an educational environment form 7-4 pm five days a week plus homework. We learn how to think, relationship to authority, values, and our experience of our relationship to others, ourselves and the world all heavily influenced by education. More and more there has been a growing dissatisfaction with mainstream education obedience tactics and a hyper-focus on standardized testing. There are many new and not so new emerging approaches to teaching and learning not typically found in mainstream or traditional education that are popping up around the world. These are called Alternative education, or non-traditional education. Examples include independent schools like Montessori,,Waldorf, democratic or free schools, Sudbury schools, open classroom schools, those based on experiential education and schools using an international curriculum. Also there is home-based learning, home schooling and home-school coops. While the approaches vary, still there is usually emphasis on small class sizes, more self direction, close relationships between students and teachers, natural/non-coercive learning, catering to multiple intelligence and facilitation of different learning styles, and a stronger sense of community than typically found in traditional education.

Montessori education

Montessori education developed by Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori, is one of the most well known names in alt. Ed. This approach, as opposed to public school education, emphasizes independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical, and social development. The Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) and the American Montessori Society (AMS) cite these elements:

  • Mixed age classrooms
  • Student choice of activity from within given options
  • Uninterrupted blocks of work time, three hours is ideal
  • A constructivist or "discovery" model, where students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction
  • Specialized educational materials developed by Montessori
  • Freedom of movement within classroom
  • Teacher trained in Montessori approach to child development

Waldorf (Steinereducation is a humanistic approach to pedagogy based on the educational philosophy of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Individual teachers and schools have a great deal of autonomy in determining curriculum content, teaching methodology and governance. Qualitative assessments of student work are integrated into the daily life of the classroom, with quantitative testing playing a minimal role in primary education and standardized testing usually limited to that required for college entry. The overarching goal is to develop free, morally responsible, and integrated individuals equipped with a high degree of social competence.

AWSNA is generally the HUB of Waldorf schools. They provide, outreach and advocacy, accreditation and school support services, professional development activities, research and publications to schools.
