Entrepreneurship Tools and Resources

collaborative/sharing economy tools

Collaborative economy platforms are counter socio-economic tools whereby consumers rent or buy from their peers rather than from the government or a company. We know these as services and start-ups which enable peer to peer exchanges through technologies such as Uber or Airbnb. These business models have been argued to be resistant to both recession and the loss of jobs to automation and technology. It is predicted that the industry will be able to create upwards of 100 million micro-entrepreneurs. These platforms provides for the optimization of resources through redistribution, sharing and reuse of excess goods and services across various aspects of social and economic life. Sharing economy technologies and services are part of an economic revolution that is quietly turning millions of people into part time entrepreneurs, decentralizing bureaucratic hierarchies, and disrupting old notions about consumption and ownership.

Examples include swapping, exchanging, collective purchasing, collaborative consumption, shared ownership, shared value, co-operatives, co-creation, recycling, upcycling, re-distribution, trading used goods, renting, borrowing, lending, subscription based models, peer-to-peer, collaborative economy, circular economy, pay-as-you-use economy, wikinomics, peer-to-peer lending, micro financing, micro-entrepreneurship, social media, the Mesh, social enterprise, futurology, crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, cradle-to-cradle, open source, open data, user generated content (UGC).

Crowd Funding & p2p micro-financing

As opposed to traditional avenues of investment, which typically include borrowing at interest or collateral large amounts from small wealthy groups of individuals, Crowd Funding is “the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.” Crowd funding platforms are very useful in funding ventures traditional financial institutions are not likely to support because of emphasis on social or environmental good over economic returns or other reasons. "Mozart, Beethoven, Whitman, Twain, and other artists funded works in similar ways — not just with help from large patrons, but by soliciting money from smaller patrons, often called subscribers. In return for their support, these subscribers might have received an early copy or special edition of the work." Most are donation based which do not need to be paid back. According to the supreme court, gifts given out of “detached and disinterested generosity” for personal reasons and without the expectation of getting something in return., may be excluded from taxable income. Read more on taxes here). There are also a number of resources for optimizing your campaign, pr, previous campaign and market analysis,  etc... that can help make campaigns successful. Crowd funding can also be microfinancing loans.

Kickstarter

Kickstarter is a global crowdfunding platform based in the United States. Campaigns are all or nothing, meaning that if you don’t make your goal, you don’t receive any funding. While it is the largest and most successful crowd funding platform, it cannot be used to fund all entrepreneurial ventures.. Kiva Zip loans don't require a credit score or collateral, but rely on social underwriting as a source of creditworthiness. This means that in order to fundraise on their website, you need to invite your friends and family to show their support by making a loan (as little as $25) to you. Kiva Zip loans are at 0% interest and go up to $10,000.

This is a liberty tool because as far as lending goes, it enables entrepreneurs to finance ventures that large lending institutions might not support and does not engage in usury.

Liberty Friendly Website Tools

Entrepreneurship in the 21st century usually means having a website. Having a website means buying a domain name from a domain name server and finding a web host for your website. What does this have to do with liberty? Different domains as well as web hosts are subject to different jurisdictions depending on their headquarters. This means depending on where your website's name and host is, regulation can enhance or threaten your liberty. For example, .com and .net are considered under US jurisdiction and can be seized upon issuing a court order. Also, web hosts based in the US can be forced to turn over records based on US policy.
