Independent Media and News

Independent media refers to any form of media that is free of influence by government or corporate interests. The term includes radio, television, newspapers or the Internet. It is also known as alternative media which distinguishes itself from mainstream media. Independent media outlets provide alternative information to that presented by mainstream media, bring to light non covered information and often aim to challenge existing powers. Access to news not covered by mainstream media is a very liberty enhancing tool.

The problems today of mainstream media are:

  • The consolidation of media ownership to a few all-powerful corporations,
  • The influence and integration of advertising in mass media,
  • The dubious reliability of experts and sources utilized by the news,
  • The concept of “flak,” which involves controlled negative responses to media content.
  • The perpetuation of traditional hegemonic power relations via the selection of content and the rhetorical and structural framing of information.

Badmirror is a liberty & privacy friendly alternative to Youtube. This social broadcasting system, unlike Youtube, is completely free of surveillance, censorship, and outside influence. The biggest difference between the two is that videos on Youtube are available to viewers world wide while videos on Badmirror gain a broader exposure only after becoming popular with viewers in ones local community, thus decentralizing culture and systemically promoting culture rooted in local people, places and issues. All in all Badmirror is a powerful social broadcasting alternative.
